Question 09
What does the Bible say about gossip?
The Bible treats gossip seriously. It is listed alongside sins like envy, deceit, and malice (Romans 1:29) and forbidden repeatedly throughout Scripture, especially in Proverbs.
Gossip destroys trust, divides friends, and damages the church. Proverbs 26:20 puts it vividly: "For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases."
A useful test before speaking: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? Would I say this if the person were standing here? Would it build them up or tear them down (Ephesians 4:29)?
If you've been hurt by gossip, take comfort that God hears, defends, and vindicates. If you've spread gossip, the gospel offers forgiveness and a fresh start—confess it, repent of it, and where possible, repair the damage with humility.
