Question 05

What does the Bible say about divorce?

God's heart for marriage is permanence. Jesus pointed back to Genesis to remind His listeners that marriage is a covenant union, not a temporary arrangement. Divorce was never part of God's original design.

Yet the Bible acknowledges that, because of human sin, divorce sometimes happens. Jesus permitted divorce in cases of sexual immorality (Matthew 19:9), and Paul addressed cases of abandonment by an unbelieving spouse (1 Corinthians 7:15). Many pastors also recognize abuse as a category that destroys the covenant.

Divorce is never God's preferred outcome, but it is not the unforgivable sin. Scripture is full of grace for the broken, and the church is called to walk with those who have experienced the pain of a marriage ending.

If you are in a struggling marriage, pursue counsel, prayer, and reconciliation wherever it is safe and possible. If you have already walked through divorce, know that God is near to the brokenhearted and that your future is not defined by your past.
