Question 06

What does the Bible say about forgiveness?

Forgiveness sits at the very center of the Christian faith. We are not forgiven because we earned it but because Christ paid the debt we could not pay. "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses" (Ephesians 1:7).

Because we have been forgiven so much, Jesus expects His followers to forgive others. The parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18) is a sober warning: refusing to forgive after receiving God's mercy is a contradiction of the gospel.

Forgiveness is not the same as forgetting, excusing the wrong, or removing all consequences. It is the decision to release the person from your judgment and entrust justice to God (Romans 12:19).

Practical forgiveness often takes time. Name the hurt honestly, bring it to God in prayer, choose to release the offender, and—when wise and safe—pursue reconciliation. Bitterness held in is a poison; forgiveness given out is freedom.
